Brazil's improvised football pitches show no space is too small for the country's second religion

Odd dimensions and uneven ground are standard fair around parts of the country.

WHEREVER YOU GO in Brazil, you’ll find two things. One is a church, the other a football pitch.

According to Irish documentary photographer Dualtagh Herr, this captures the Brazilian psyche in microcosm.

“While it is a strikingly devout country in the traditional sense, it worships two Gods. For here, in the land of Garrincha, Pelé and Zico, football is also elevated to the level of religion.”

Herr has launched a series of photographs called FUTEBOL FUTEBOL FUTEBOL which documents football pitches in Brazil located on Google satellite view.

Herr – who is now based in London – scanned the terrain of the towns and cities of Brazil using Google’s vast collection of satellite imagery in search of the football pitches that are a prominent feature in every city, town and village.

After locating and composing the scenes in Google satellite view, Herr re-photographed the images on screen using a camera fixed to a tripod with the pitches framed within their wider social and community context.

The results are impressive:
